Unpack iRecycle app for iOS and Android

This app works for Android, iOS for your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, and in your browser. While the browser version is surprisingly less efficient than the app as it’s actually not an app at all, you’ll find that it’s all using the same basic directory of information, and it all works. This application does is present you with an amazingly simple-to-use interface that shows categories of recycling, first of all. What you’re seeing above is the chart that pops up on the iPhone 5, it showing you a set of 12 categories: Automotive, Batteries, Construction, Electronics, Garden, Glass, Hazardous, Household, Metal, Paint, Paper, and Plastic.

everything from Aerosol Cans to Lawnmowers to Vehicle Donation and yes, there is some double-posting of secondary categories to make sure you get to where you want to go even if you select Metals instead of Automotive to recycle the metal in your vehicle. Once you select this secondary category, you get a screen that uses your current location and gives you all of the nearby locations that recycle the product you’ve chosen.

Once you’ve found the one you want, you get a display with information including a phone number, the ability to visit the institution’s website, a link to Maps, a checklist of other materials accepted, Restrictions, and additional notes. Of course each of these items only appears if the location has that information readily available sometimes all you get is a location.Share button in the upper right-hand corner when you get to a location screen and everything connects as it should. This app is so easy to use and so helpful when we want to recycle our wares that it’s almost amazing that it’s free.

Upcoming  BlackBerry BB10 QWERTY Handset

BlackBerry 10 and two handsets at the end of January. But at this point, there shouldn’t be many surprises. Nearly every detail of the platform and touchscreen phone has leaked already. And now details are surfacing of the BB10 QWERTY model, too. Meet the X10.

BlackBerry 10 is said to be designed as a touch-first operating system. The mobile OS makes sense on the touchscreen-only Z10 where there is plenty of room for the large app icons and application menu. But here, on the X10′s small screen, it just looks too tight. The action bar, one of BB10′s key features, takes up significant real estate at the bottom of the screen.

RIM has said from the early days of BB10 development that it would continue to support and produce phones with physical keypads. The company adamantly claims their customers love the QWERTY keypad. And as a former BlackBerry addict myself,I understand the obsession. The QWERTY keypad begins to feel as comfortable as a trusted pillow. You couldn’t imagine living a different way. But once you make the jump to an intelligent virtual keypad, there’s no looking back. There is just so much room for activities on the larger screen that you quickly forget about the missing keypad.

LG Plans to Launch HomeTheater In 2013

Its home audio offerings are anchored by four new sound bar models, with all but the entry-level NB2030A featuring built-in Bluetooth and a wireless subwoofer. The top two models come in a new, larger size, designed to match 47-inch TVs, which reflects the rising popularity of larger screen HDTVs.

The strangest model may be the NB3730A, which includes built-in Wi-Fi and a basic streaming-media suite including including Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, Hulu Plus, Vudu, and Pandora. Paying extra for streaming-media in a sound bar seems like a hard sell especially with the superior Roku LT available for just $50 so I'd be surprised if many people opted for the NB3730A over less expensive models.

The chart also includes LG's line of Blu-ray home-theater-in-a-box systems, which all featuring built-in Wi-Fi and LG's full Smart TV suite of apps. You'll notice the higher-end models are listed as "9.1 systems", but that's more marketing than anything else the additional channels are top-mounted drivers on the speakers, designed to create a more immersive sound Regardless, I've been hesitant to recommend HTIB systems these days over competing options, and these models don't offer anything that changes my mind.

For Blu-ray, LG is slimming its line down to just three models: BP330, BP530 and BP730. At first glance, the entry-level BP330 looks most attractive, with built-in Wi-Fi and the same stripped-down collection of streaming services included on the NB3730A sound bar.

The most interesting step-up feature on the BP530 and BDP730 is private sound mode, which lets you listen to the audio of your Blu-ray player via an app on your smartphone -- essentially a DIY wireless headphones solution. That's probably not enough incentive to pay extra over the BP330, but it's a feature that's likely to appeal to more buyers than 3D, 4K upscaling, or a Web browser.workaday products in the new line for buyers looking to pickup a Blu-ray player, Bluetooth speaker, or sound bar, although we'll have a better idea after LG announces pricing.

Fingers too fat For IPHONE

LATESTVIEWER.BLOGSPOT would be stunned into emitting lava from my mouth had I not myself, with a slim-fingered witness at my side, enjoyed a somewhat similar experience at a Verizon store, where the salesperson did everything possible to unsell me an iPhone.

But he did offer that other phones were 10 times faster than the iPhone and that only Apple wants to push iPhones, Verizon doesn't.I am sure that in neither case could the salesperson's iPooh-poohing be at all related to the amount of money the store makes from the iPhone.

I have contacted Sprint to see whether the company has any comment about the digital size of customers who are eligible to buy an iPhone.

Instagram Drive to Attempt to change its Terms of Service

Instagram updated terms of service, introduced last Monday (though Instagram has since beckpedaled), would "transfer valuable property rights to Instagram while simultaneously relieving Instagram from any liability for commercially exploiting customers' photographs and artistic content, while shielding Instagram from legal liability, reads the suit, filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco on LAST Friday.

Instagram making a "grab for customer property rights," the suit claims, it's also attempting to cover its tail by prohibiting users from seeking legal injunction against the service, or indeed through a no-class-action arbitration clause any legal action aside from small-claims remedies.

Instagram had said the new terms of service would go into effect January 16 and that users could not opt out but could delete their accounts before the deadline. The suit takes issue with that last point, saying customers could cancel, but that in doing so they'd forfeit the right to their photos

Classic Facebook's clone of Snapchat

Facebook's clone of Snapchat, the app whose messages self-destruct after 1 to 10 seconds. As many people like to point out, it's perfect for sexting, but there are a lot of other fun and innovative uses for this clever type of messaging.

For all intents and purposes, Poke is almost identical to Snapchat. Snapchat is focused on photos and videos, while Poke adds self-destructing messages and the classic Facebook poke feature to its arsenal. Poke relies entirely on your Facebook friend network, while Snapchat can dig into your contacts and let you share photos with strangers.

Snapchat already has a loyal user base that sends more than 50 million photos across its network every day, with many of its users teenagers.

Defensibility

Technology startups' products aren't easy to clone because they have proprietary technology that even the big companies don't have. Just imagine AltaVista trying to clone Google it wouldn't have succeeded.

Snapchat's current users aren't going to immediately abandon the app for Facebook Poke. They've built up friends, messages, and a history on Snapchat, and they will continue to invite their friends to join. Poke's launch could affect user growth as potential users may choose it over Snapchat, but Poke also brings a lot more attention to the market and may end up boosting Snapchat's growth. How both apps perform in the App Store over the next few weeks will give us a better idea of Facebook's impact on Snapchat.

Snapchat's founders have been at this since May 2011. They've had time to think about the road map for their product, and they don't have dozens of other products and projects to distract them. Snapchat's founders reportedly turned down an acquisition offer from Facebook. They wouldn't do that if they didn't have a long-term plan they were confident in.

Facebook Turns to Expands Photo Upload Feature

Facebook last week opened a new front in the so-called photo app wars with the launch of its ephemeral photo app Poke. But Facebook’s focus on apps like Poke, Camera and Instagram doesn’t mean that it is has stopped enhancing the photo experience on its main social networking platform. Facebook has now implemented a new “drag to upload” feature to allow users to add photos to their status updates more easily.

Photographs are one of the most central parts of the Facebook experience. They are one of the main reasons that people regularly use the site, both to upload their own pictures to share with others and to see their friends’ pictures. That means making photos easier to upload is an important part of increasing that engagement and time spent on Facebook. And engagement and time spent on the site, of course, are crucial metrics for the ad-funded service.

The users can now drag images from their PC/Mac desktops directly into the status update box, and
even upload several pictures at once without needing to create an album. That speeds up and simplifies the process of uploading images, saving users a few moments of clicking around windows to upload a file.

Two New Google Tv's From LG Releasing Between FEB-APR 2013

LG has announced two new Google TVs for release in 2013 that will include QWERTY remote controls and natural speech recognition.Following last year's singular G2 Google TV, the company is offering the GA7900 (55-inch, 47-inch) and the GA6400 (60-inches).

Both televisions have QWERTY motion remote controls with an integrated mic for "natural" voice commands. The design will be different from the new Motion Remotes announced in late December but will likely resemble the reversible slab that shipped with the G2. Passive Cinema 3D will also be part of both models.

The top-of-the-line GA7900 features an edge-lit LED with local dimming and a 240Hz refresh rate, which likely includes backlight scanning as in previous years' models. As a counter to this, the GA6400 is simply edge-lit and includes a lower 120Hz refresh. As far as the information we have been provided is concerned, these are the main differences between the two products.

3D-Printed Records

TechShop in San Francisco and created the records on a large-scale Objet Connex500 printer, which has a particularly high 600dpi X and Y resolution and a print layer accuracy of 16 microns.the reason, vinyl's recent popularity has led to events like Record Store Day and DIY projects like Amanda Ghassaei's 3D-printed records.

It produced records with grooves that are wider and deeper than factory-made vinyls, so each side can only fit five or six minutes of sound. Check out a video of Ghassaei removing the white resin records from the printer, pizza-style, and scraping off the residue here. She notes that her 3D-printed copy of Daft Punk's "Around the World" had such a heavy bass sound that it threw the needle off and forced her to revise the conversion algorithm. Meanwhile, you can download her other printed songs like New Order's "Blue Monday" here.

Enjoy Social Mobile Games

Mobile games are better when they are social for one simple reason: Games are more fun with friends. Games have always been social, from backgammon and chess to board games. Along the way, friends have been a central part of the game experience, including how we discover, play and talk about games. Social design concepts work wherever people are playing games on desktop web and increasingly on mobile. As the online gamer demographic becomes more diverse, the best way for an app to grow is by reaching people and their friends across all screens.People are increasingly bringing their phones – an inherently social device – with them everywhere. Recent data suggests that 58 percent of smartphone users check their phones at least once every hour.

Developers don’t need to choose between Facebook or mobile you should be thinking, Facebook and mobile. There are 1 billion people on Facebook and 600 million people actively engaging with Facebook on mobile devices. Not reaching these Facebook-connected mobile users is a missed opportunity. From Zynga’s Words With Friends and PopCap’s Bejeweled Blitz, to FreshPlanet’s SongPop, FishSticks Games’ Slots Journey, and Supercell’s Hay Day, there is a range of social mobile games that have propelled to the top of the charts.

In fact, nearly 2 lakhs mobile apps and games are built with Facebook APIs. At any given time, 6-8 of the top-grossing iPhone apps are integrated with Facebook. This year’s Apple’s Editor’s Pick is Bad Robot Interactive’s Action Movie FX, an app integrated with Facebook.

More than 10 percent of Kixeye’s players are paying customers, and the average player comes back three to four times a day, for more than 30 minutes each session. Specifically, 25 percent of revenue for Battle Pirates comes from people who have played the game 12 months or longer, and War Commander gamers play more than two sessions a day and spend 1.5 hours battling their friends/enemies on an average day.

Social mobile games are a perfect setting for competitive play among friends. Players want to reach the next level to one-up a friend and brag about it on their timeline, which brings their friends into the game and creates a viral loop. As a result, Facebook-connected players tend to spend more time and money in mobile apps.

Unpack Microsoft Surface Pro

Microsoft is saying about the 2-pound tablet

64-bit computing in a tablet: Surface with Windows 8 Pro is "a 64-bit tablet PC." That's not a trivial point. You get all of the goodness of 64-bit computing via Intel's power-efficient Core i5 Ivy Bridge processors. Surface RT, on the other hand, is 32-bit only.

Security: Support for the same level of security you can expect with any corporate Windows laptop. And Microsoft includes sBitLocker, which encrypts your hard drive's data.

Pen: It includes a pen. That really a holdover from the Windows 7 slates but something that some business customers still want.

Mini DisplayPort/display: This allows connection to large high-resolution displays. That said, the Surface Pro's 10.6-inch 1,920x1,080-pixel display is already the same resolution of some desktop displays. Other ports include a full-size USB 3.0, microSDXC card slot, headset jack, and Cover port.

Microsoft, in effect, pre-announced the Surface Pro's battery life the other day. Let's just hope that it trends closer to an ultrabook with a tolerable run-down time. This is a tablet, after all.

Let's close on a high note, though. Early this year, I had a chance to use the Intel Core i5-based Samsung tablet with Windows 8 Developer Preview.I was immediately wowed by its speed. At the time, I felt it was much quicker than the iPad 2 I had been using every day.

If the Surface Pro can replicate that experience, it will attract power users looking for a snappy Windows 8 tablet.

Microsoft Turns To Build Devices and Web Services

Microsoft pushed down that path in 2012 with its new Windows 8 operating system, which provides a platform for a bevy of Web-connected services it hopes consumers will use. And it rolled out its Surface RT tablet computer, a slick-looking slate-and-keypad combination designed to grab share in the market that Apple's iPad now dominates.

Windows 8 tablets
The first tablets from Microsoft and its partners used a variant of Windows 8, called Windows RT, designed specifically for devices running the ARM system-on-a-chip architecture that keeps gadgets thin and extends battery life. Next year, beefier and more expensive tablets will emerge that run the full version of Windows 8.

It's a bit confusing for consumers. But the Windows 8 tablets will be able to do a few things the Windows RT ones can't; most notably, they'll run legacy Windows applications in the familiar desktop mode. That could have some appeal for corporate customers, who are likely to be slow to adopt the new tile-based interface on Windows RT devices.

Kin THREE
The Microsoft could try its hand at making a mobile phone. After all, the company rolled out the Surface, competing directly with hardware makers, to showcase Windows 8 on tablets. It's not too much of a reach to believe that the company might make a mobile phone to put its Windows Phone 8 operating system in the best light.Microsoft made mobile phones once before. The short-lived Kin ONE and Kin TWO were yanked from the market less than two months after their debut. That disaster notwithstanding, if Microsoft is really going to be a devices and services company, making its own phone seems like a possible next step.

Xbox Next
Microsoft is already a device company. Just look no farther than its Xbox video game console. The first Xbox debuted in 2001. Its successor, the Xbox 360, hit shelves in 2005. It's remarkable that the Xbox 360 continues to sell well, even outselling Nintendo's brand new Wii U console in November, according to NPD.Engineers, designers and product managers have been plugging away at a gadget, dubbed by some as Xbox Next or Xbox 720. It's likely that Microsoft will announce plans for its next console, perhaps at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles next June.

Microsoft has been increasingly morphing the device into an entertainment system complete with movie, cable and music services. Count on the next Xbox to push even farther in that direction.

Skype is Microsoft verb
Microsoft has offered plenty of services over the years, everything from Xbox Live to its Skydrive Web storage offering. But Microsoft never had a product that users invoked as a verb.

Skype may well be a prototypical service for Microsoft's future offerings. More than a quarter billion users tap into Skype on their PCs, tablets and smartphones. That's not enough for Microsoft, though. It's putting Skype at the heart of all its communications offerings. Starting early next year, Skype will replace Microsoft's instant messaging service, Windows Live Messenger.

There is already a version of Skype for Windows 8, complete with the tile-based interface that's at the core of the new operating system. Skype engineers are working on a Windows Phone application. It's not too hard to imagine that Microsoft will offer a version of Skype for the Xbox as well.

32GB USB 3.0 flash drive at $19.99

USB 2.0 is over, man. It's the digital equivalent of the horse and buggy. And yet it's still pretty rare to find flash drives that support the newer, faster USB 3.0 spec. The black-and-turquoise drive features a retractable USB plug (my favorite design), backward compatibility with USB 2.0, and a one-year warranty.sequential read and write rates of 90MB/second and 16MB/second, respectively, the drive should blow the doors off any USB 2.0 storage you've used in the past.

According to Ice Monkey's stock meter, the company has a full inventory of these drives, though how many actual units that means is anybody's guess. Also, it's worth noting that Ice Monkey has a fairly mediocre score over at ResellerRatings.com, with poor communication and slow shipping being the big complaints.

4G LTE Smartphone Comes Next Year 2013

Companies that stand to benefit the most include Apple,Samsung, and LG, with the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 among the most popular handsets.vendors will participate in the LTE push, such as Nokia, HTC, Motorola, Blackberry, Huawei, ZTE, and Pantech. Growth in LTE smartphones will be driven by demand in such countries as the U.S., the U.K., Japan.

LTE smartphone shipments worldwide will exceed a quarter-billion units for the first time,Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, said in a statement.Multiple operators and multiple phone vendors will be launching dozens of LTE models across numerous countries worldwide. LTE has quickly become a high-growth, high-value market that no operator, service developer, component maker, or device vendor can afford to ignore.

Amazon will not find it easy to break into the fiercely competitive LTE smartphone market and they will need breakthrough products that are strongly differentiated in areas such as design, price, or services,Strategy Analytics analyst Linda Sui said in a statement.

Apple's iPhone 5 Apparent Cutting Back On Parts Orders

Apple's apparent cutting back on parts orders for the iPhone 5 are nothing to worry about, according to J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz.

Moskowitz points out that recent reports have indicated a 20 percent cut in Apple's March-quarter supply chain orders for the iPhone 5. That news has some analysts fretting over Apple's near-term prospects, but Moskowitz believes their fears are overblown.Apple may have initially pushed its suppliers to ramp up manufacturing of the new phone, and the downshift in orders may be just an aftereffect. It's also possible that Moskowitz's interpretation is just wishful thinking.the supply chain adjustments could imply that manufacturing yields on iPhone 5 have improved, which means Apple's gross margin profile could rebound to 40 percent, which would be a positive,Moskowitz said. That would be in line with Apple's argument that its recent decline in profit margin resulted from the launch of several major products.

The iPhone 5 order cuts could affect Apple's results for the March quarter. But the company's build plans are always in a state of flux, and it certainly has plenty of time to change those plans further if warranted, Moskowitz opined.Apple needs some big new products in the coming year, Moskowitz thinks Apple can do just fine with its current lineup, especially the iPhone 5.

Microsoft's Surface tablet

Microsoft Surface has arrived in Verizon stores And chances are you won't even notice it.

Verizon is using the tablet to showcase the Windows and Windows Phone experience but that's about all for now.We are delighted that Verizon have chosen Surface for use in their stores, however, we have nothing further to share at this time.

Best Buy stores availability is spotty. Select Best Buy stores have them in-store, others don't yet, according to a Best Buy sales rep in Los Angeles.

Microsoft's first branded PC product was launched on October 26 and sold exclusively at Microsoft stores until last week.As distribution widens, sales are expected to pick up. An analyst at IHS-iSuppli recently told LATESTVIEWER.BLOGSPOT.IN  that the tablet got off to a respectable start considering its limited distribution.

Android Phones And Tablets Gets strong Battery Life

Android smartphones can have a pretty bad reputation when it comes to battery life, though that reputation has definitely improved in general over time. A new report updated today from the Root Uninstaller Team ranks the top 15 and worst 15 Android devices based on statistics shared through their app. There’s a huge variance between the best and the worst, and the ones on top might not be the flagship devices you’re looking for.

Root Uninstaller looks at both Android tablets and Android smartphones, which you might expect to skew the results a little bit. But despite a dominating performance from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the list of the top 15 performers was a healthy mix of phones and slates. Coming in a close second with over 60 hours of battery life on average was the LG Optimus Pro, a phone released in July with a hardware keyboard and relatively small 240×320 display running Android 2.3.3 with a 3 MP camera. It’s on odd duck, with its QWERTY and VGA video, but it’s cheap, and according to this list, if it’s battery life you’re after most of all, you can do no better than the Optimus Pro.

The Motorola DROID RAZR HD also ranks pretty highly, highest among more up-market devices, with north of 40 hours battery life on average, and the HTC One V doesn’t rank that far behind with 40 hours. The RAZR HD’s battery life is something I can actually personally attest to: it’s a smartphone that keeps going long after I expect it to have faded. Admittedly, I’m not generally using it that much since it isn’t my main device, but there’s no denying it outlasts most of its competition by a wide margin.

Root Uninstaller’s list covers 474 Android devices and spans 5,585 user-submitted battery reports, so it has a decent-sized sampling, plus you see a lot of synchronicity with what reviewers and users have shared anecdotally about device battery life. The average life overall for Android devices is 20.4 hours, by the way, or just under a full day, and the top battery killer apps are generally actually boring system processes, as well as something called Cowboy.Battery life isn’t bad overall based on these numbers, but it’s not great either: next generation battery tech.

Samsung Announces Galaxy 5-inch Jelly Smartphone

Samsung today unveiled the Galaxy Grand smartphone, which runs the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean" mobile operating system and sports a 5-inch WVGA display. The smartphone also features a powerful dual-core 1.2GHz processor, along with 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera offering 1080p video recording and a 2-megapixel front camera.

The Korean smartphone giant said the smartphone will be sold in two variants: the I9080, which offers single SIM service, while the I9082 will offer dual SIM functionality, allowing users to use two separate cell numbers from the same device, such as work and personal numbers.

The smartphone also includes built-in features, such as Direct Call, Popup Video, Smart Alert, and S-Voice, the Samsung's rival to Apple's Siri voice-activated assistant.

Announced in the midst of the December holiday season, only days before many businesses finish for the year and consumer holiday spending reaches its peak, the Galaxy Grand is leaping into the public consciousness with no pricing or availability information.

TVs will Be Web-Enabled Soon
Gartner defines it as one that lets you access and search the Internet for videos and other items. The TV may or may not come with its own dedicated Web browser, but it does provide an app store that lets you install a range of different apps. A smart TV also may offer you the option to connect with your smartphone, tablet, or PC.

With connectivity to smartphones and tablets comes the ability to pull content from the Internet on one device and push that content to the TV, Gartner research analyst Paul O'Donovan said in a statement. For those TV manufacturers that also make smartphones and tablets, the marketing advantage of the smart TV makes educating the consumer a lot easier.Smart TVs will increasingly play a dual role in offering Internet content as well as traditional TV broadcasts. But even in 2016, pay-TV services will provide most of the premium shows, movies, sporting events, and other programming that still won't be readily found on the Internet.

TV sales in a downspin these days, smart TVs alone won't convince consumers to shell out their hard-earned cash to buy one.Instead, TV makers also need to think about the actual capabilities and the content being offered by their respective brands.

In the end, the choice may be all about the extra content that one TV brand offers over another,O'Donovan said.Consumers will be asking questions such as, which Internet TV services can the TV access.

Google Giant Has Big Plans For 2013

This year Google introduced its Nexus tablets to generally strong reviews, along with a Nexus 4 smartphone that showed a high-end smartphone can be sold, unlocked, for a highly competitive price. But while Apple trumpets millions of iPhones and iPads sold, we don't have a clear sense of how many Nexus devices are selling. Shortages of Nexus tablets have been reported, and the Nexus 4 has been difficult to keep in stock. And yet absent a big marketing campaign or mainstream buzz, the Nexus devices are still at risk of looking like also-rans in a mobile world dominated by Apple and Samsung.

Google I/O is returning to the month of May this year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the next version of the Nexus 7 unveiled around that time. The Nexus 10 is only a couple of months old, but we would also expect a refreshed version of the device sometime in 2013. As for the Nexus smartphone it would be nice to see it able to access LTE networks. But getting U.S. carriers to pick it up will likely be a challenge.

It was in December 2011 that Google's executive chairman predicted most developers would soon choose to develop for Android first. More than a year later, there's little evidence that's the case. Whether because of Android users' reputation for being harder to monetize, or concerns about developing for the fragmented ecosystem, or other intangibles, big venture-backed startups often launch first with an iOS app. There are signs that this is starting to change.By some measures Apple and Google's app stores are now roughly tied in the number of apps available on their platforms. It's something we'll be watching closely in 2013.

Nokia CEO Tells About Lumia 920

The changes within Nokia that will ultimately have the largest impact in the company's bid to turn itself around. I sat down with Elop to discuss the company's transformation, its latest Lumia 920 flagship smartphone, and other topics. The following is an edited transcript of that conversation.

Stephen Elop: As I wander around and talk to people, there's something happening here.Everyone knows every single day we have to work harder and with more urgency. We need to challenge what everyone is doing. We need to keep doing that. They're working on the next set of products, and the next ones. They're excited, because you ain't seen nothing yet. It starts with motivated employees delivering great products.

Lumia 920 and finalizing it for AT&T launch, you bet I'm on every one of those last phone calls, and asking the questions. People are exhausted when they cross that goal line. There's been a marked shift towards this challenger mindset. We have to move with urgency. We have to have empathy and listen to our customers.

The first Lumia phone was delivered in a fraction of the time that a phone has ever been produced at the company.

Android 4.1 upgrade options for Nook Tablet

The company offers a similar option for the Nook HD+.Whether you're not a fan of Barnes & Noble's heavily modified version of Android, you just want the option of a more traditional Android tablet experience, there's now a plug-and-play solution.

Starting today, you can download one of N2A Cards' specialized image files, copy it to your own microSD card, and boot that card in your Nook HD+. The result: your tablet transformed to a modded version of Android 4.1, able to access the Google Play store and run pretty much every Android-compatible app.

Want to go back to the way things were? Reboot and choose the Nook OS, or just pop the card out. Either way, no harm done; your HD+ will go back to the way it was Apps, data, account, and warranty intact.

If you don't own a compatible microSD card (according to the developer, only A-Data Class 10, SanDisk Class 4or10, and Transcend Class 10 cards will work) N2A Cards will sell you a card that's ready to boot right out of the package. The download option costs $19.99. If you don't want to roll your own, it costs $29.99 for an 8GB N2A Card, $39.99 for the 16GB version, $64.99 for the 32GB version, and $84.99 for the 64GB card.

A few weeks back I tried the N2A download with my Nook Tablet, and it's been working great. I suspect it's even better on the Nook HD+ (though I haven't seen it firsthand myself), what with its faster processor, sharper screen, etc. It even supports the camera for things like Skype.

As I noted last time, you can probably create your own bootable microSD card for free but only if you know what you're doing.Personally, I like a plug-and-play option, especially when it's backed by tech support.Whether you buy one of the preconfigured cards or create one yourself using the download option, I think you'll really like running Jelly Bean in the form of the popular CyanogenMod) on your Nook HD+.

Bluetooth Enabled Toilets controlled by an Android App

Japan already has the market cornered on fancy toilets, but there's always room for more potty innovations. A new line of toilets from Lixil will soon turn smartphones into commode controllers. The Satis toilets are set for release in early 2013.Through the magic of Bluetooth and an accompanying Android app, users will have minute control over these high-tech privies.

The app can trigger a lifting of the toilet seat or a flush if you've forgotten. According to the promo video, it looks like the app can also control an extending bidet feature that looks absolutely frightening. The app lets you maintain a diary of toilet use and even play music through built-in speakers.I would suggest either a soothing mix of smooth jazz songs or the Nyan Cat song on loop.

Since so many people already confess to using their phones in the bathroom, it makes sense to hand off toilet controls to the gadget you're already using. These fancy potties will likely be embraced by germaphobes looking to minimize their physical interaction with the porcelain throne. They also have obvious geek appeal and will give Android users bragging rights over their iPhone-wielding counterparts.

Google Maps For iOS Nabs

It no secret a lot of people have been downloading Google Maps for iOS since it came out last week, and today Google released the full numbers. In its first two days on the App Store, the software was downloaded more than 10 million times, Jeff Huber, Google's senior vice president of Commerce & Local, wrote in a post on Google+ this morning.

We're excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world,Huber said.Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years.

Google's Maps app quickly jumped to the top free app on the App Store after its release late last week. The software was a bit of a surprise, with reports of its arrival coming just hours before it went live. The software replaces some of the functionality no longer found in the built-in maps software, which Apple replaced with its own data and services as part of September's iOS 6.

In October, Apple said that more than 200 million users were running iOS 6, about half of the some 400 million iOS devices sold through that time period. Users on iOS 5 and below continue to run Apple's mapping software that uses data from Google.

Nokia Lumia 920 Camera Fuzziness

After spending some quality time with several Lumia 920 prototypes in Finland last September, we came away extremely impressed with the PureView-branded camera aboard Nokia's Windows Phone 8 flagship. It's the first handset to feature optical image stabilization the floating sensor and lens enable ultra-stable video recording and phenomenal low-light stills. Imagine our disappointment then, when upon receiving our Lumia 920 review units, the shooter failed to live up to our lofty expectations. While the OIS was performing as advertised, most photos we took suffered from an obvious lack of detail, an annoying fuzziness / softness. We reached out to Nokia and it exchanged one of our phones, but to no avail. Compounding matters, we also experienced problems with inconsistent white balance and exposure. The company never confirmed these issues, but hinted that the camera software was still being tweaked. We've been longing for an update ever since.

It's time to rejoice, because it looks like something's in the works. This weekend we obtained an exclusive set of identical pictures taken with two Lumia 920 handsets one setup with the existing PR1.0 firmware, the other running the upcoming PR1.1 update . Here's the great news: looking at these sample shots,it's abundantly clear that Nokia's fixed the camera's fuzziness problem. The not-so-great news is that we're still seeing some issues with white balance. Nokia US recently hinted on Twitter that an update is scheduled "this month" and our source confirms that it's indeed PR1.1. The new software also includes many stability, LTE and web browsing improvements, plus Microsoft's own tweaks. We've compiled the images plus some composites for comparison in the galleries below.

RIM Forward BlackBerry 10 Software And Devices

RIM is officially launching BlackBerry 10 next month at a special event, with devices scheduled to go on sale a little after that, but select customers will get a chance to test the platform more extensively before that. The company announced today that certain government and enterprise customers will now begin beta testing BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, along with pre-production BB10 smartphones, in a program including 120 customers across different industries.

This is like an extended version of RIM’s BlackBerry 10 Ready Program, but with much less of a promotional aim. Instead, it seems focused on making sure that RIM’s top-tier clients know what they’re getting into with BlackBerry 10. The changes in the platform are significant, after all, and while they’re almost all changes for the better, in my opinion based on my hands-on time with the mobile OS, they’ll still require an adjustment period for enterprise customers used to the old way of doing things.

As part of the program, RIM notes that its customers will be able to get “first-hand experience with features such as BlackBerry Balance, the BlackBerry Hub, the ability to seamlessly flow between core applications, the dedicated enterprise app store and the BlackBerry 10 platform’s secure connectivity to behind the firewall applications and data through BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10.That may sound like so much marketing speak, but in fact those elements listed are the key differences between BB10 and BB7, and the ones that will take the most adjustment. I’ve also heard anecdotally that many enterprise customers are actually incredibly interested in the Balance feature, which separates out work content in a siloed, firewalled portion of the OS that’s nonetheless easy for a user with the requisite security clearance to access and switch between, so this will be a chance for those users to see how it actually operates in practice before making a large-scale commitment to the platform.

The bottom line is that making sure its enterprise customers are on board with BB10 is and should be a top priority for the smartphone maker, and having a seed program to introduce them to it before its wider launch both indicates a confidence in BB10's ability to perform in real world situations, and an acknowledgement that this is something new that customers will need time to become accustomed to.

Vantec launches NexStar WiFi hard Drive

If you want to keep that cloud thing a little closer to home, Vantec has just released the NexStar hard drive dock that lets you bump the storage of all your domestic devices via WiFi. You can insert any SATA 2.5 or 3.5-inch hard drive into the toaster-like dock, then connect an Android or iOS device via dedicated apps, along with any Mac or PC using the SMB protocol. The dock also supports Airplay, has a USB 3.0 port for a direct computer connection and works with UPnP, allowing media players on your network to browse files as well. Pricing has yet to be announced, but Vantec promises you'll be able to snag one this month. Further freshly-grilled details in the PR after the break.

Vantec Expands NexStar Hard Drive Dock Adding Wi-Fi
The New NexStar Wi-Fi Hard Drive Dock Allows Simultaneous Wi-Fi Access to Data Stored in the Hard Drive Creating a Simple Network for Fire-Sharing.

Vantec Thermal Technologies-a worldwide leader specializing in computer accessories, storage and mobile solutions-announces the new addition to the Hard Drive Dock lineup, the NexStar® WiFi Hard Drive Dock. The new model, NexStar WiFi, allows users to connect wirelessly to the data stored in the user's hard drive over the Hard Drive Dock's Wi-Fi signal. This allows anyone with Wi-Fi capable devices to connect to the NexStar WiFi. In addition, Vantec has released Apps ready on the Apple App StoreSM and Google Play Store to work with the new NexStar WiFi.

With the increasing usage of mobile smart devices in our daily lives, data capacity becomes an issue and to process file-sharing without an internet-ready network can also become an inconvenience. To solve this issue, Vantec has provided the solution by adding the NexStar WiFi to the mix and creating a centralized hub for all types of data and file sharing. In addition, PC computer and Mac can also share files wirelessly over the SMB protocol. The NexStar WiFi is also UPnP capable so media players and media centers can easily browse files when they are connected to the same Wi-Fi network from the NexStar.

The NexStar WiFi App is currently available on the App Store and Google Play Store and is free to download. Some additional features have been added to the NexStar WiFi App for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch such as Airplay support allowing data to be streamed to any devices supporting Airplay.

The Hard Drive Dock product line started in 2008 and Vantec has since then introduced many products to choose from including models featuring various external interfaces and also the dual bay Hard Drive Dock models. The NexStar WiFi includes a USB 3.0 external interface to work with the current USB 3.0 standard for faster file transfer.

Apple Looks in 2013

Apple TV,

Has there ever been an Apple product with this much rumor intensity behind it? Well sure the iPad, and the iPhone before it. As the saying goes, where there's smoke there's fire, and the chances of Apple finally releasing a big new TV product in 2013 are looking hot.

Uncertainty remains over just what kind of a product Apple's working on though. The company already has a set-top box, but it's not for plugging into your cable. Instead, its main purpose is to connect with Apple's digital stores, along with third-party streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. More recently Apple's added options to pipe video and other media content from iOS and Mac devices on the same Wi-Fi network.

Would Apple really forgo something small, simple, and cheap for what is likely to be an expensive piece of hardware that's difficult to ship, stock, and that people are likely to replace maybe once every five years .Apple to roll out a smarter set-top box with better ways to view TV programming and control basic TV functions two things Apple's current models can't do.

In 2013 will be the year of peace. We already had a taste of that with the 10-year truce announced between Apple and HTC in November. I think there's a good chance we'll see the same from two remaining fights Apple's in with rivals.

The clear frontrunner is Apple's spat with Samsung. It's been a nasty fight, and one that's got more nastiness in line with yet another trial that kicks off in 2014. The two sides have already met several times to talk things out, something that did not go anywhere. Samsung, for its part, has gone back and forth saying it's not willing to negotiate, while also recently pointing out that it was "willing to sit down to talk it out again.

The other big fight is between Apple and Google. While late Apple CEO Steve Jobs pledged a thermonuclear war on Google's Android, current Apple CEO Tim Cook has suggested he's not as interested in litigation. Both fights with HTC and Samsung have been seen as proxies for a larger battle with Google. With that said, the first jabs in that fight in the form of a lawsuit between Apple and now Google-owned Motorola Mobility has not gotten off to a very promising start. A Wisconsin judge tossed out the case last month.

Security Hole Found in Samsung Devices

A suspected security hole affecting a handful of Samsung smartphones could give apps access to user data and leave the handset vulnerable to malicious apps and bricking, according to a developer. The vulnerability, which was discovered and detailed by an XDA member with the handle alephzain, lies in Exynos 4, the ARM-based system-on-chip typically found in Samsung smartphones and tablets. Alephzain developed an exploit he said bypasses the system permissions, allowing any app to extract data from the device's RAM or inject malicious code into the kernel.

Alephzain said that he stumbled upon the vulnerability while trying to find a new way to root his Galaxy S3, but that the exploit affects the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note, and Meizu MX as well. However, the Nexus 10 is unaffected as it uses the Exynos 5 chip.

The good news is we can easily obtain root on these devices and the bad is there is no control over it,alephzain writes.

Walmart Was Ever-Present in Facebook Mobile News Feed

Walmart was ever-present in Facebook's mobile news feed. That because the massive retailer was trying out an experiment it took out 50 million ads on the social network in an effort to drive users to its Web site for holiday deals. This experiment was Facebook biggest mobile advertising campaign ever, and it's looking like there will be more to come, according to the Wall Street Journal. The social network is apparently thinking about letting other companies partake in similar experiments.

Walmart's collaboration with Facebook was different from a typical mobile ad campaign on the social network. Instead of paying by ad clicks, Walmart pre-bought millions of ads that then overwhelmed any other retailers advertising on the cyber shopping weekend.Overall, the retailer bought 2 billion ads on Facebook to post throughout the holiday season, which includes the 50 million ads that it bought during the Black Friday experiment. Walmart declined to say how much these ads cost.

According to the Wall Street Journal, it's unclear how much the ad campaign drove Walmart sales, but the retailer's marketing chief, Stephen Quinn, did tell the newspaper that he never saw this level of engagement before with a digital-ad campaign.

Walmart products for sale and 164,000 new Facebook fans liked Walmart's page, there were also several users that complained of the proliferation of ads in their feeds, according to the Wall Street Journal.Whether Facebook will be able to monetize via mobile has been a hot topic of discussion since the social network went public for $38 a share in May. Many analysts speculated that in order to keep share prices from falling, the social network had to figure out how to monetize its growing number of mobile users.

After plummeting stocks and an all-time low in September, Facebook now seems to be recovering. According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook's mobile ad revenue grew in the last quarter to $153 million and its shares are currently up more than 50 percent since September. However, the social network total ad sales have amounted to just a 10 percent increase per quarter this year and shares are still down since Facebook's IPO closing at $26.81 on Friday.

iPhone 5 More sales in China

It's been just three days since Apple's iPhone 5 launch in China and already 2 million devices have already been sold. The tech giant announced today that this latest model of its popular smartphone is selling faster than ever in the Far East country.Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China,Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.

The iPhone 5 went on sale on Thursday in China and even before people could get their hands on the smartphone, hundreds of thousands of online reservations were already made for the device. The device is available through carriers China Telecom and China Unicom and, as of now, it's still not being offered on China Mobile the country's largest carrier. China is of huge significance for Apple, it is the company's second biggest market after the U.S.and already accounted for about 15 percent of the company's revenue for its fiscal year that ended in September.

When the iPhone 5 first launched in the U.S. in September, its sales topped 5 million units over first weekend which was a million higher than the iPhone 4S. According to analysts at investment bank Canaccord Genuity, it is expected that Apple will sell 47.5 million iPhones in the current quarter, up from its prior forecast for 45 million. However, estimates for the first quarter of 2013 have been slightly lowered now 46 million instead of 47.5 million as the earlier-than-expected China launch is most likely pulling sales into this quarter.

Besides China, the iPhone 5 will also be on sale in more than 100 other countries by the end of the month. According to Apple, this makes the iPhone 5 the fastest iPhone rollout ever.
